Lincoln
Today we started with breakfast in a diner, full American...if there is such a thing, eggs, home fries, toast and a pancake!
We then drove to Harpers Ferry, a settlement on the banks of the Shenandoah River and Potomac Rivers as they converge. Great to think we were on the banks of the Potomac in Washington and we meet it again!
Harpers Ferry is an open air museum now with many old buildings to look round. It is perhaps mostly famous for the slave uprising lead by Old John Brown in 1857, is was not successful and he hanged for his efforts but it sparked flames between the north and south leading to civil war. The town also has a rich industrial heritage. See extras.
We then drove to Gettysburg to visit the National Military Park. It is a huge site where over 50,000 men lost there lives in the civil war battle in 1863. Also where Lincoln gave his famous address! The extra is a view to some of the other memorials around the site. It us a very tranquil and thought provoking place.....except when bus loads kids arrive!
We then dove a couple of hours to our overnight outside Philadelphia at a place called King of Prussia!! Hotel quite plush but not near any decent eateries so ended up at Burger King!!!
