My favourite town

Our last day down south, so we visited Henley-on-Thames, my favourite place and the hometown of my father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather.

We took a river cruise on the 'Hibernia', which went upstream to Marsh Lock, where as children we used to help to open the lock gates, unmechanised in those days. The boat then turned round, coming back through Henley and continuing up the Regatta course where the course markers, marquees and grandstands were already being assembled for the event in a month's time, and on to Hambleden Lock where she turned back for Henley.

My Blip today is of the bridge and church, and the extra of the mile long course, first run in 1839. Apart from the rowing, fashion plays a major part in the Royal Regatta - it's almost an Ascot on water!

Home to Oban tomorrow.
