Potato planting in Westray

This morning we continued our Orkney adventure by catching the early morning ferry from Kirkwall to the island of Westray on another beautiful day.

We looked at puffins although they were slightly too far away to get good close ups , and nesting fulmars and gannets on some spectacular sheer cliffs.

On our travels we came across this small field being planted with potatoes in a way I haven't seen for many years and it was lovely to watch. I also liked the lovely old cottages as in the extra which we came across at the side of a very rocky road through fields heading for an RSPB reserve.

We did a bit of family history research in the graveyard of the old Kirk at Pierowall where we are staying for a week with a little side trip to Papa Westray. It gave me slight goose bumps to find the gravestone of my Great Great Grandfather and his wife who died in 1891 and 1892 - one of the reasons for this trip.
