Heineken Fly

Rhingia campestris.
Apparently the extra long proboscis let's it reach parts of the flower that other flies cannot.

Was drawn over to the irises this morning and caught this little hover fly - with a forecast of rain for most of the day I took my chance - well done me as 20 minutes later it was pouring down, which it's done on and off all day.
Emails sent, local canoe club joined, and Garden Office (mancave ) planning application started - we took a pause in the rain to wander pooch round the village. It's been Scarecrow weekend (extra). After a couple of lacklustre years the new committee put a lot of effort in - and the village has been packed all weekend. Initially I thought the displays were only so:so, but overhearing a conversation in the shop we wandered back up to the church...
This years theme was weddings (many people ignore the theme) and on arriving at the church we realised the committee had excelled - a horse drawn carriage (scarecrow) outside, but inside.... Not just the bride and groom, not just a vicar, but a choir, a photographer, bride & grooms families, congregation, flower girls - even, just visible, bell ringers! An astounding amount of effort - and a great return. They've sold more tea and cakes in these three days than a normal year of (monthly) farmers markets, all for charity. The café and chocolate factory has also been super busy.
Well done Orton.
