What in the World?!!!?

Another day, another surprise. This time, instead of a bird I've never seen in my yard before, the husband and #2 Son found this little fellow/gal in our driveway. Right up at the top of the driveway where the cars are, in the gravel. Where had it walked from? It is clearly a tiny baby snapping turtle and it must have just recently hatched, but... Where did mama lay her eggs? How far did it come? Crazy!!

I took it down the hill to a place near the creek and left it there. I have no idea when baby snappers get in the water after they're hatched, but I hope it knows what it's doing. The odds of any particular tiny snapping turtle surviving to adulthood are very small, but we can hope!
