WOLDS RAILWAY

Spent the day with M searching for signs of the Malton to Driffield Railway. My legs are on fire as I chose to wear shorts forgetting that excursions through nettled fields would be the order of the day.
This line crossed the Yorkshire Wolds and this compilation photo shows . . .
LEFT - Coal drops at North Grimston Station – opened in 1853 . . . with one coal drop for the exclusive use of Lord Middleton.
MIDDLE - Water Tower at Wharram Station – the metal tank was still on the top in 2008  . . .
RIGHT - the entrance to Burdale Tunnel . . . construction was started at the Southern end in 1847 and eventually completed in 1853. The tunnel is just 16 yards short of 1 mile in length and closed in 1958. Soon after closure there are stories of folk playing tiddlywinks half way through, with the game being lit by the headlights of cars.
We need to go back with a ladder . . . hehe . . . you will soon find out why.
