Edelweiss

Today's the day ....................... for an alpine

I've been weeding the rockery today - which I realise would not be everyone's cup of tea - but for me, is one of my favourite occupations.

I think that all alpines are exquisite, but these edelweiss which are at their best just now, have to one of the most curious-looking plants that we have.  They belong to the daisy family and they prefer rocky limestone places at about 1,800 - 3,000 metres (5,900 - 9,800 ft) altitude.   That could be why they are covered in white dense hair to protect them from the cold and keep water loss to a minimum.

As a scarce, short-lived flower found in remote mountain areas, the plant is symbolic of a rugged beauty and purity.  It is used as a national symbol in Austria, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovenia and Switzerland.  According to folk tradition, giving this flower to a loved one is a promise of dedication.

And, of course, it will forever be associated with a certain song in the 1965 film - The Sound of Music .........................
