Asleep not deceased
It's tupping time and this ram is taking a well deserved rest - note the leather raddle straps on his shoulders - the raddle holds a coloured crayon so that he leaves a mark on the ewes back. The colour of the crayon is changed regularly so the shepherd will now the order of lambing. If a ewe is coloured twice it means she didn't conceive the first time - if all the ewes are coloured twice it means the ram is firing blanks and needs to be replaced.
On my first school farm we had an overweight ram who used to worry passersby because when he was sleeping on his side his big belly looked like a bloated dead sheep - I used to hold my breath until he moved on calling his name.
