E had booked us on to one of the Malvern Walking Festival walks - a railway-related one in Colwall just over the hill.
This is one of two vents for the tunnel that passes through the hills. Strictly, that's two tunnels as a second one had to be bored as the first one became unworkable as rolling stock sizes got bigger. The vents serve both tunnels. As we arrived here there was a suitable whooshing noise as a train passed underneath.
The railway engineer responsible for the tunnel, Stephen Ballard, is buried a few yards from the shaft.

We got the train out ourselves this evening; much to the delight of the young family staying with us this week, and some other guests...
