It is Friday!
This is the "reeds duo" fronting the Quincy Quintet at Burgundy's last night. I had the immense pleasure of sitting next to them, enveloped by their great sounds together and solos. On the left Dave Lee on alto and clarinet and on the right Steve Andrews on tenor and clarinet. Immense talent and backed by even more talent - Pete Major on keyboards, Lawrence Canty on bass and Peter Boocock on drums.
Steve Andrews hails from Sunderland but has lived in Cumbria for the past 24 years. A former Jazz Club Chairman of Washington Jazz Club in the late 1970s. A retired accountant for many years Steve collects saxophones. And he has a wealth of knowledge about the history of jazz in the UK - we will have to get him to record this valuable information somehow.
Steve was a late addition as Dave's vocalist daughter Fran had a sore throat - it just truly amazes me when these guys get together and with a few words they have a number and a key and then together they are into the swing of a full on jazz number. I have decided to get tenor sax lessons but have probably left it too late and I think it takes some innate talent over and above reading music and learning the fingering for the notes
