We shall have rain

The forecast monsoon conditions for today's Superlative Walk around Preston did not materialise.  Instead the rain was merely persistent, heavy at times. It therefore felt apt to pause outside this shop in Orchard Street. The “WE SHALL HAVE RAIN” sign was applied when the building was Goodwin Brothers Umbrella Shop. The line is taken from the old weather folklore saying that “if it rains on St Swithin's Day (15 July) then we shall have rain for forty days."

We later paused by this statue of Sir Robert Peel in Winckley Square.  The statue, created in 1851 by Thomas Duckett , was criticised at the time for the tightness of his trousers.
