La Pasionaria

Commemorating the Scots of the International Brigade who fought and died in the Spanish Civil War, this statue is of Spanish Communist Party leader Dolores Ibarruri; known as La Pasionaria (passion flower) for her fiery rhetoric, she lived in exile in Moscow until after Franco’s death in 1975 – she returned to Spain in 1977 and was re-elected to parliament at the age of 81.
