Will you walk into my (pretty) parlour........
I've been meaning to photograph this rose gall for a few days now. It is called Robin's pincushion gall and is formed in reaction to the gall wasp laying eggs in the leaf bud of my dog rose. They will hatch next spring.
Today I discovered a companion hiding there - the European garden spider or cross orbweaver (presumably a male because the females dedicate their lives to protecting their eggs and stay with them until they die).
The fly (I don't know what type! a blow fly?) landed while I was shooting and the spider slowly extended its forelegs and inched closer - sadly (for me) the fly flew off before it could come to any harm.
The spider and the fly poem was written by Mary Howitt and published in 1829. It is a charming poem and worth a read. The first verse goes:
"Will you walk into my parlor?" said the spider to the fly;
"'Tis the prettiest little parlor that ever you may spy.
The way into my parlor is up a winding stair,
And I have many curious things to show when you are there."
"Oh no, no," said the little fly; "to ask me is in vain,
For who goes up your winding stair can ne'er come down again."
Lovely.
THANK YOU everyone for all the stars and hearts that got my bullet blue tit into the spotlight. I'd forgotten what a buzz it is to get there so thanks so much. Have a lovely weekend.
