Arkadi Monastery

We visited a fascinating monastery today: a beautiful place with a tragic history. In 1866 hundreds of Cretans resisted the occupying Turks by taking refugee in the monastery. After a 2 week siege and a battle, the Cretans blew themselves up using gunpowder. A little girl was the sole survivor and lived to a ripe old age (there's a bust of her there).
