Abstract Thursday: "Hope"

I must admit, I had this abstract done and ready to load before I realised the theme Ingeborg has set for Abstract Thursday this week!

As I've mentioned previously, work is underway on re-opening walled-up doorways to join the two parts of our house together. Last week's shots were of work on the first floor. That's gone very well, and John has now started work downstairs. We knew there was a previous opening between the two rooms (both kitchens, most recently), but we really had very little idea of what we'd find when we got into the wall. So it's been a matter for hoping for the best, and then hoping that what we've found is sufficient for John to do his stuff and get us to where we want to be.

What you're seeing here is a slightly abstract view of the lines and surfaces we're looking at now the units and cooker have been  removed and tiles and plasterboard taken off. Features include modernish timber framing, some of it for what looks like a doorway in a position where we're pretty sure there wasn't a door; blockwork of at least two vintages walling up previous openings to varying degrees; ancient masonry; a large area of old horsehair plaster, still clinging on; a fireplace we didn't know was there, which caused great excitement when it was exposed yesterday; various dangling electrical bits, plus assorted pipes that need to be re-routed around the new doorway; and, although they're not really visible in this abstract version, an assortment of lintels and RSJs inserted during previous phases of walling up.

We spent a lot of this morning assessing what's there, and we have a plan. Hope will ultimately triumph! :)
