Wine with a view!
That was how this glass of Vinho Verde was described when we bought it on the ramparts of the Castelo de Sao Jorge high above the Alfama district of Lisbon and looking out across the rest of the city. You can see my friend Liz here enjoying the wine and the view.
We've had a day of views. Setting out on the metro across the city to the viewpoint at the top of the Parque Edwardo VII we had a slight hiccup when we tried to leave the metro station as we found we came out into the middle of a department store. The huge El Cortes Ingles (Spanish) and had to ask for directions to get out of the store!
From there we walked down to the tree filled boulevard of Avenida da Liberdade lined with expensive hotels and designer shops. Your can see the location avenue where the line of trees are on the left hand side of the picture.
We stopped for a coffee before heading to the oldest Lisbon funicular, Elevador de Lavra. I read that it was one that most tourists overlook so never crowded and it took us up to a little park with a view called the Jardim do Torel. A perfect shady spot to eat our elecit sandwiches made at breakfast!
In the extra you can see some of the colourful houses in our view.
Reaching Placa Rossio at the bottom we could see Castel Sao Jorge on the skyline and decided to try to get up there. We had been told it wasn't worth it as they charge to get in and there isn't much there. We beg to differ as we spent a good two hours up there with views all around accompanied by the sound of peacocks ( just like home) and a music ensemble preparing for a concert . All for a senior rate of 5€ each.
Returned via the Alfama district again finding a new route down with more views - extra 2 - and then looked for somewhere to eat in the central Baixo area. We went to look at the extraordinary Elavador de Santa Justa - extra 3 - but there were long queues to get up it and we decided we'd had enough views for today, sadly our last full day here.
It has been a much hazier sun today and more pleasant than yesterday only reaching 29 degrees!
We ate dinner at Nicola's in Rossio watching the manic traffic around the square and a random belly dancer who turned up to share her street entertainment with us!
Managed the metro back without incident as we're old hands now, shame were not staying another week.
