Why does the Daily Fail sound surprised?

In spite of this morning's news giving the day an odd positive-negative vibe I headed off to Kew to meet Z in a positive frame of mind. Good things that happened:
 - trains were all on time;
- Z was on time;
- we both got in free on account of my RHS Volunteer card and her JL Partnership card (but then felt bad because Kew are so desperately underfunded);
- didn't feel so bad later when the cashier in the cafe totalled up our lunch bill;
- the weather was unexpectedly fab;
- and so was the Hive.
