Freedom Monument - the symbol of an independent Latvia. Since independence, the search began for a suitable artistic solutions and donations were gathered. In 1931-35 the monument was erected, its author is a famous Latvian architect Karlis Zale. Statue of Liberty (sculpturer R. Mirsmeden) holds three stars - the symbols of historical regions of Latvia: Courland, Vidzeme, Latgale.
In the pedestal sculptures "Guardians of the Motherland," "Mother Latvia", "Work, Family," etc. The monument faces west - there looking sculpture of Liberty, proudly pointing to the same figure straighten skulputrnyh other compositions. In the East, look bent in a bow shape in chains ...
Interestingly, the character of an independent Latvia managed to survive in the Soviet era. According to legend, after the war, Stalin intended to blow it up, but for the monument has stood Vera Mukhina (author of the "cult" of the Soviet monument "Worker and Collective Farm Girl"), who was born in Riga and was a student of K. Hall. Monument as having artistic value left, but it was forgotten. After 100 meters on the other side of the boulevard strictly back to the "freedom" and toward the east, was erected a statue of Lenin.
Naturally, during the restructuring, Freedom Monument was the main place of meetings and protests. Here, in 1994, Bill Clinton announced support of America nezaviisimoy States. Widely known monument was also due to the infamous march of veterans of the Latvian SS Legion in the 90 years that ended with the laying of flowers at the foot of it (in the last two years, under various pretexts, Riga authorities barring those marches.
