Sea Asparagus
“Salicornia”, also called samphire greens, sea beans, pickle weed, beach asparagus, glasswort, or crow’s foot greens is a vegetable, a succulent, halophyte (salt tolerant) flowering plant native to North America, Europe, South Africa and South Asia. (Not South America or Australia) We have a little patch on our beach near the high tide line. They grow in salt marshes and are a plant that has apparently made it’s way back to the sea. My book says butterflies and moth larvae feed on them (!) I’ve only ever tried them a bit sautéed in butter for salads, but can eat them crunchy raw…NO need to add salt! In this photo you can also see a bit of sea lettuce also edible and rockweed, which has a nice oil for your skin in it. and a few snails, and barnacles and lots of broken clam shells.
Getting ready to return to Seattle tonight… the weather changed and we’re letting the well water sit a bit longer until the waterguy comes the beginning of next week to run the pipe to the cabin. so….enough of this “camping” with no running water…altho I’ve had a very lovely time.
the WBC this week is Vegetable.
