Waiting to pass through a swing bridge.

A bit more of a challenge on the canal this morning. More boats around, swing bridges to negotiate, a couple of moorings and a U turn in Bath to reach a mooring. Never done a U turn before, only sketchy advice on the internet and nothing at all in any of the information provided by the hire company or the Canal and River Trust's Essential Guide to Boating.

Completed the turn well, in my opinion, under the watchful gaze of a canal bank home owner who was concerned I was going to bump into his property and several onlookers who were intently interested to see if a catastrophe was about to unfold. I disappointed them and was able to move off with pride intact.

Spent a pleasant afternoon in Bath, very busy as it was a Sunday. Went on a short guided Jane Austen walk pointing out parts of the city where Jane lived, some of the places she saw and used in her novels and some of the main sites of the city.

Visited No 1 Royal Crescent to see what it was like to live and work in one of the houses in this elegant Georgian crescent. Bath, of course, was the place outside London to be seen during the "season" where a display of wealth was a necessary part of your standing in society.

A very good tour but it made us just too late for tea in the Regency Tea Room in the Jane Austin Centre so as it was late afternoon we had to make do with tea in a disposable cup and a scone in the decidedly 21st Century Cornwall Pasty Company. The scones were excellent and as a bonus they selling off pasties at the end of the day for £1.50 rather than £3.45 so that sorted dinner.

Enjoyed a walk along the Avon and back along the canal to the boat where we had a proper cup of tea and were entertained by a pair of swans and their cygnets alongside the boat.

We plan to return to Bath tomorrow morning before puttering east towards Bradford and on to Devizes during the rest of the week.
