River steps

See those steps? That go down to the river and then carry on, into the water? Nearly fifty years ago, my mother and father walked down those steps. They filled their coat pockets with stones and walked down those steps to the water and they carried on walking into the water until the water was over their heads. And they carried on walking.

And eventually - my father swore that it was over five minutes later - they walked up those steps on the other side of the river.
