Back Blipping from Mongolia

Digging up the past

I never in my wildest dreams thought that I would be digging up dinosaur bones! We were taken for an al fresco breakfast at a site where a small Tarbosaurus (T Rex) fossilised skeleton had been found. Rather than being kept away by barriers, we were able to pick small fragments of 75 million year old bone from the ground. Our camp hosts had done rather better than we had and had recently excavated some large foot bones (see extras)

Later, on a walk through the Khermen Tsav canyon, we found another 4 sites where apparently unexcavated dinosaur skeletons are in situ, their locations only being given away by the bone fragments brought to the surface by weather erosion.

Very few people get this far into the Gobi and I felt extremely privileged to be there!
