Stilettos in the Sun
And so the heat and wind and dry thunderstorms that I mentioned yesterday have now caused fires which have killed over 60 people north of Lisbon - many more than any other in living memory - surely global warming has contributed? I wish those who deny it would come spend a day - or a week would be better - suffering the heat here with no air conditioning, and then have flames engulf their home...
We went to a procession in the nearby town of Luz, about 7 tonight - the heat was almost unbearable (50.5 degrees C on the car sensor), and yet the president of the town council did it in stilettos - what a woman!
The day ended with a private meal in the local restaurant, of river fish with Pe Luís and friends - feels such a privilege to be included. The man sitting next to me, born and bred in Mourão, said, the Alentejo is hot, but he's never known it like this when it's not even summer yet.
And back in the UK, our son's new fiancee has been deported tonight, along with her family...
