inspired by our Wemyss Ware cats
These two cheeky Wemyss ware cats are a happy reminder of a holiday in Fife, researching Adrian's family history and my interest in the Kirkcaldy potteries. We couldn't decide which cat to buy, so we bought a pair of them.
This lively and distinctive pottery was originally bought cheaply by working class people for their everyday ware. Then Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother started collecting it. Prices began to rise in the 1960's and by 1984, just over 100 years after it first went into production, a tabby cat , originally bought for a few shillings, sold for £8,8000.
But don't gasp! The Griselda Hill pottery in Kirkcaldy now owns the Wemyss Ware trademark so we were able to buy our two cats for a fraction of that price!
