Blue Door
I like the painted doors here.
I first came to Chora in the early 1980s. I used to stay in an old guesthouse on the edge of the village which belonged to an old man (old man?...I'm more or less the age now that he was, then!) called Ioannis Fostieris. He was a kindly man who
shared a house with his brother, both of them unmarried. I heard that he had once loved a woman who ended up marrying someone else...and that was it.
I used to stay with him every summer for several years and there were a number of other regular visitors, one or two of whom became friends. Ioannis would often help me with learning Greek, he was patient and would speak slowly and clearly. He also had the most poetic English. I remember him mimicking the way I inhaled smoke from a cigarette and saying, "Den kapniseis! Don't smoke, or else you go very soon to graveyard!" Fortunately I gave up
smoking a few years later but that's another story.
