Remembering
Remembering is something we take for granted until we cannot...
Today we were at the funeral of M, father of our dear friend V. She gave a lovely and moving eulogy about family memories and times when M was able to remember everyday things, which for some years had been increasingly impossible.
J’s dad, J, who takes up a lot of our time (and rightly so) has not been able to remember nor express himself properly for many years. He is now safe in a good care facility, but it can be so hard to see him struggle.
Then, people out of the blue remember, just when you least expect it...
We have been frequent visitors to the optician’s with pairs of glasses after J has forgotten them and sat on them, or twisted them, whatever. S, the director at the optician’s has been so patient with us and gets his staff to repair when ever they can, and at no cost.
This morning J went in with another pair of his mangled spectacles, and the assistant informed her that S had remembered that it was Dementia Awareness Week and had taken upon himself to order a free spare pair of frames.
J was so moved by that little act of extreme kindness from a true professional.
