Winter Solstice
I got up at sparrow's fart this morning in order to be at Elizabeth Bay House by 6.30am.
Whether by accident or design, Elizabeth Bay House was built in direct alignment with the sun’s rays on the winter solstice, creating a magnificent display each year.
The sun goes down the hall, out the back door, into the garden beyond and hits the cliff wall at the back of the house.
You may be able to see that there are people lined up on either side of the hall, which meant, of course, that it was difficult to photograph the effect from the best angle.
I popped upstairs and thought the long shadows of the guide illustrated the effect quite well.
A couple of extras, the first showing a lovely young girl looking at Elizabeth Bay and the harbour beyond.
