Nelson…………..

………………………..Haven, NZ

Haulashore Island, framed by the chain fence of Rocks Road.

The Island was given that name as that is where early settlers beached their boats for cleaning and repairs. In 1906 the piece of land was cut off from the 12 kilometre long boulder bank when engineers completed the ‘Cut’ to provide safe entry to Nelson Haven. Previously, it was only an island at high tide.

The Chain Fence runs for almost 2 kilometres from Tahunanui Beach towards the Port of Nelson.
The first section was erected along part of the wall in 1898 and in 1912/13 it was extended.

Rocks Road, along the Nelson Haven foreshore was completed in 1899. An extension was built largely by prisoners from the Nelson Gaol.
For an interesting read on Rocks Road and the prison labour take a peep at this link.
