Canoe Race Winners 1966
Back in the day our family would join other scout families and do a family camp weekend out at the local Girl Scout Camp over labor day...it was a much looked forward to tradition each year. One of the looked forward to events was a canoe race and each year a friend Barb and I entered for our families....she was in the bow to guide it and I in the stern to steer it. Each year we beat the boys from other units! We had perfected the turn so when we raced down to the end we swiftly did a quick turn leaving the boys in the dust way back as we paddled quickly back to the start and finish line....winning neatly with big grins. One year, 1966, an award was given to us as well as a bouquet of ragweed which we were both alergic too and my mother loudly announced just that!
It was kind of cool to be winners against the boys from other family units...one year they even brought their own homemade personal paddle pronouncing at the joint family campfire that they were going to "kill us girls" in the race that year....not to be as Barb and I knew it wasn't only speed but skill in the fast turn around that won us the race each year and we continued to do so that year!!!
