The Queens' Response

“Chessmen? Yes, we're chessmen.”
As one voice the two queens speak,
“Although we're quite outnumbered!”
Understatement of the week!

“The black queen is my best friend,”
the white queen's quick to say.
“The white queen's my best friend, as well,
when games aren't underway,”

the black queen says. She then admits,
“We're lady-chessmen – right?”
The white queen nods agreement
“True; it's not all black and white!”

“And when we're in a chessmatch,
it's quite a different thing.”
“Quite so,” the black queen soon concurs.
“Each loyal to our king!”

And so we leave them nattering,
and hear each queen confess,
that when they're off the chessboard,
shopping trumps a game of chess.
