Loudoun Hill- History, Geology, Sport
Rising to over 1,000 feet this volcanic plug on the Ayrshire/Lanarkshire border is a significant feature just off the A71.
Remains of Iron Age settlement were found at the foot of the hill and the Romans also built a fort nearby.
History abounds and two battles were fought nearby one featuring Robert the Bruce and the other in Covenanting times, The Battle of Drumclog.
The exposed face is used frequently by those wishing to hone their skills in rock climbing.
