Cocker hoop
This is 2/3 pint of Jennings' Cockerhoop. The reason why this is an important snap to me is that it's perfectly clear, just as beer should be. We're in The George in Keswick which means this is a local beer but not just for local people. There were about five different beers on tap and each one was crystal clear. The barman here gets it - customers appreciate quality and will come back for more. Unfortunately, not every inn keeper has the same view. We came down off Helvellyn into Patterdale a few days ago. The first pub you come to looks very inviting after a hilly blast but the beer didn't live up to expectations. The first pint was cloudy. When I pointed this out to the lad serving he said that it was a new barrel. Then he said that the boss had knocked the barrel and it would take a day to clear. Don't serve it then. He kindly replaced it with a different beer. This time, although it was a little clearer, it tasted of vinegar. I couldn't be bothered to tell him and left it un-drunk. Will I be back? To Helvellyn certainly, but when I reach this particular pub I'll keep on going. Shame. Hats off to The George and all good pubs like it that keep and serve beer with pride.
