Nice touches

Grand gestures and big things are all very well and good.

And sometimes they are important.

But we have something of a reputation in Great Britain for the nice little touches that show how much we care. And for that I thank you for your kind words yesterday.

These touches, if not done, would not take anything away from an event, occassion or situation.

For example, there wouldn't have been an outcry if there were no gold post boxes, or if the Olympic Stadium hadn't been turned red white and blue for Paralympic success.

Nor would I have felt aggrieved if I had not received the letter from Number 10 Downing Street today. But what a lovely touch.

And so it was at Goodison Park tonight before the Everton vs Newcastle game. No-one would have said "They should have done................" if they hadn't done something for the 96.

What they did was simple. Two children, one in an Everton shirt, the other Liverpool. On one, the number 9, the other, 6. Simple.
Applause while they screened imaged and the names of the 96 and The Hollies "He ain't heavy, he's my Brother" played over the PA system.

Lovely touches.
