Charlbury and ....
..... St. Mary the Virgin parish church.
Today we say goodbye to Charlbury/ The Bell and before we left we visited this lovely church , it has been a place of worship for over 900 years. I was particularly interested in the 17th century spiral staircase leading up to the ringing chamber , since 1716 St Mary's has had a peal of six bells . The clock also chimes the quarter/ half and hour , we could see and hear this from our room at The Bell Inn. Also on the church wall is a sundial of 1776 , the Yew tree seen in the collage has branches as big as tree trunks the like of which I've never seen before. The tower of the church was built in the 13thcentury.
We had a plea sent journey home until we reached the 2 motorways 4 & 3 then the 25 when we seemed to be in the rush hour tho' it was only 3pm it started!!!
Thankful ..... to have had a driver, thanks " A".
