Tourists by Duane Hanson, 1970
Like Andy Warhol, Hanson saw banalities as key characteristics of the postwar, consumer society. In the Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh. The extras are juxtapositons of gallery visitors and exhibits. In the 2nd I liked the way it looked as if the metal sculpture was carrying the painting. In the third, the way the viewer's coat echoed the shapes and colours of the art work on the wall. In the 4th the little boy in the corner who looked as if he was about to leap into the middle of the models (cardboard versions of all 266 places of worship in Edinburgh).
