A brief glimpse

At 6am we had this view to the mountains and we were hopeful for a walk with spectacular views . But it was not to be - by 7 the clouds were down and there was no view of anything so we decided to cut our losses and head north - had we walked and tried to drive to Chalon tomorrow even by peage it would have been a long day. As it was we took 6 hours. We did a bit of motorway from Grenoble to Lyon (at za cost of €25) and coasting downhill we were zapped by a speed camera. Hey ho! All those slow careful miles through villages and small towns - that's Sod's law.

The rest of the journey on D roads was through pleasant scenery and now we are parked up in a free Aire (to recoup the peage cost if not the speeding ticket) with this view of another Notre Dame - in Dole, a medieval town in the Jura. We explored the narrow streets and visited the church. There was a memorial to people who died "in the service of the king" - Louis XIV in 1794. They were guillotined.

It is warm and sunny - I hope saving on the campsite cost will compensate for the noisy road in front and the thunk of the skateboard park behind us.

Tomorrow we'll head to Chalon-en-Champagne via Dijon - I might not stop for the mustard but I do hope to have a visit to a champagne house and perhaps stock up for our Golden Wedding in November.
