missing, presumed lost

I had an ultrasound scan yesterday for a possible aortic aneurysm.  The consultant couldn’t find any sign of one. He also couldn’t find my gall bladder.

I had it when I came in - I’m positive.  It’s not the sort of thing that you easily mislay.  Not like the car keys or your mobile.

Consultant; “did they remove it when you had your liver resection?”
Me; “dunno”.
Consultant; “It’s quite common to do that when they open you up.”

Common?  Common?

I go through my notes and my hospital discharge papers this morning.  No mention of the absent gall bladder - no “while we were at it we thought we’d knock through to the pancreas - open it up a bit and give you a bit more space …. it’s all the rage these days.”

I will begin the labourious job of phoning the hospital to see if it’s been handed in.  I hate to think of it lying in a hospital waste skip somewhere.

As Toyah Wilcox once said, “it’s a mystery”.
