CLIFF SHELTER

Scarborough is THE seaside spa town and was the first seaside resort in the UK. In Victorian times, hundreds came here to take the spa waters, for improved health, and to enjoy the new pastime of promenading along the seafront. Oh to have listened in to some of those conversations ! Early Twitters.

To assist in this pastime, many special rest shelters were designed, providing resting places up and down the steep cliff walks. The first shelters were erected around 1892.

This large shelter is near the back of the Spa Complex and was restored in 2007. Features include tiled roof, decorated gables and coved ceiling. The garden at the front adds impact and the shelter can hold around 15 people at a sitting.
There are 12 more shelters on this cliff, looked after by the Scarborough Civic Society.
