Farnborough

Today the car had to go to the garage to have some parts replaced and as I didn't want to stay there waiting I opted to go home using a combination of Shanks's pony and the train. It never ceases to amaze me how much you learn about a place by walking around the less busy roads. My route from the garage to the station took me past a 6th form college and a couple of primary schools. Almost all the pupils were getting themselves to their destination either on foot, or, more frequently, on two wheels. Farnborough I found has a comprehensive and sensible network of cycle routes which make getting from A to B a realistic and safe possibility for everyone, even quite small children. The bikes seemed to outnumber the four wheeled traffic quite substantially during rush hour. It was most heartening to witness. Not quite like round here where it's a lot more hilly and the car is boss.
