The accidental finding

Laurie Lee's local

The Gloucestershire writer Laurie Lee, who wrote the memoir Cider with Rosie, amongst other books, grew up in Slad, near Stroud. He went to Spain as a young man and either did or didn't fight in the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War, depending on whose story you believe!

Laurie died in 1997, and is buried in Slad Churchyard, nearby. There is a Laurie Lee walking trail around the village of Slad. The pub, the Woolpack, where Laurie died, celebrates his long and somewhat curmudgeonly heritage. We stopped here for a drink on the way back from Cheltenham, on what must have been one of the hottest days of the year. The interior of the lounge bar was was cool and empty: all the drinkers were outside!

If you're in the area, I thoroughly recommend this pub. I've been going there for years. They do food too.

As for the interview, I had to do some off the cuff teaching! Time will tell if I've been successful.
