Slovenia, Adriatic Coast: Piran/Pirano
Slovenia has only 47 kilometres of the Adriatic Coast; Piran is its principal tourist attraction, but the remainder of the coast is also of interest. It was and still is a major provider of salt.
Piran is essentially a Venetian town occupying a narrow peninsula. The first photo for today shows the view upwards from the oval Tartinijev Square to the tower of the baroque St George's church (originally of the 13th century).
The second photo is taken from the church back towards the square. Until 1865 the square comprised Piran's inner harbour; it was the filled in, providing a large open public space.
Giuseppe Tartini - in Slovene language Tartinijev - was a local composer and violinist of the mid-18th century. His statue is in the square: look carefully at the second photo and you should be able to locate it.
