Ljubljana: early morning at Presernov Square
Two photos, the second of which continues a better view of the white building towards the right.
Our bus was shortly to depart for Zagreb, so of necessity I came down to this square. It is normally teeming with tourists and locals, so at in early hour I managed to get an almost uncluttered view of the triple bridge over the Ljubljanica River.
France Preseren (1800-1849), whose statue appears in the second photo, is Slovenia's national poet. His writings challenged the dominant literary language, German, and set new standards for Slovenian literature at a time when nationalism was rising. (My guide book informs me that he was also a drunkard, philanderer and social outcast. Oh dear!)
