The Tesdale Monument
This monument is in the Church of St Mary, at Glympton.
The monument was erected some time after 1616, when Maud Tesdale died. She was the wife of Thomas Tesdale (d 1610), and left orders for the erection of the monument on her death. Thomas Tesdale was one of the founders of Pembroke College, Oxford, as noted by the inscription below the centre of the monument,.
Under the monument proper is a marble slab on which the inscription tells the story of Maud (Auspice Christo).
Glympton is a small village, not far from Woodstock in Oxfordshire. It is already enough on the edge of the Cotswolds to be quite hilly. And the village and surrounding countryside are very pretty. The church is by the Manor House, attached to which is some attractive landscaped parkland.
The gatehouse to the estate is very striking both from inside the park, as well as from across the road outside.
A new and interesting discovery!
