Sawley Abbey
This Cistertian monastery was founded in January 1147 by William de Percy and colonised by monks from Newminster Abbey in Northumberland. Although never particularly wealthy, the abbey survived for almost 400 years until its suppression in 1536.
I was working from home, this afternoon, so that British Gas could come and fit some 'smart meters', which they seemed very keen to do. However, it transpired that they need to fit the electricity meter before they can do the gas one and that the electricity infrastructure company need to come and do something before British Gas can do their bit. Ho hum.
Milly, who's staying with me at the moment, was keen that we go across to Clitheroe to visit the coffee shop that the Minx and I had discovered on a previous visit, so, as I had no work to do that couldn't wait until the evening, we hopped in the car and set off.
One of the features I enjoy in the Google Maps app is that it suggests alternative routes as you go, and on the way there we took a diversion via Wigglesworth, which in turn took us past Sawley Abbey. Although we didn't have that much time to spare, we couldn't resist stopping for a quick walk around the ruins. It was quite fascinating and we agreed we'd go back when we had more time.
After that, we made it in time to catch the coffee shop (Milly was doing some present buying) and then found a cute little courtyard where we had a bottle of beer and meze in the sun. Perfect.
