Poinsettia

Ok all you plant lovers out there... Seeing as you were so helpful with my Orchid last year (which lasted longer than I expected), can someone tell me how long these things are meant to last and what I'm meant to do with it?! The instructions essentially tell me to bin it after the festive season which seems a big waste and it's dropping leaves all over the place!
