Textiles

In Speke quite early today and watched a couple of the conservation team opening up some textiles that are back from being frozen. Over the years we have had a number of infestations in the Hall and the insects may be killed through freezing the object. The textiles are wrapped in plastic and vacuum-sealed, then brought to a freezing temp as quickly as possible (doing this quickly prevents the insects from adjusting to the cold). After at least a few days, the textiles are brought slowly back to room temp to avoid further damage. Whilst this method kills adults it is not 100% effective on eggs. There were about 6/7 items being opened up today after freezing, including this tapestry. I'll try and find out more about it tomorrow. Fascinating watching the process. This is the side of the National Trust that many visitors never see. Pleasingly the plan was open all of these during opening hours today, allowing visitors to see conservation in action. Have a great weekend. Next week is graduation week at the cathedral (John Moores University), it should be very busy, but quite nice to be involved. I can feel my poor feet aching already. There are 10 full house sessions during the week 2 every day.
