Stockport Air Raid Shelters
I met up with some friends in Stockport and some of them had never been to the air raid shelters, and so ...
Stockport is built on sandstone like much of Greater Manchester and when they demolished some old houses before WW2 they discovered that the previous residents had enlarged their homes simply by tunneling back into the sandstone cliff behind the houses. And that gave them the idea for the air raid shelters. Initially they could hold 3,850 people but were later extended to accommodate up to 6,500 people. There were toilets, medical facilities, refreshments and some people stayed all night.
They re-oponed in 1996 as a tourist attraction and if you ever find yourself in Stockport with nothing to do then the air raid shelters are well worth a visit (they are next to the Merseyway Shopping Centre).
