Prittlewell Priory
Another fair day but really chilly this morning, perhaps its time to think about trousers instead of shorts!
After yesterdays blip, were talking about missing things near to home, decided to go and have a look at the Priory on our way into Southend. This priory was established about 1110ad and has been having extensive renovation and refurbishment over the last 12 months. It was originally home to Cluniac monks from France until the Dissolution of the Monasteries when it became a private home. Bought for £400 in 1538 with land, buildings and ground together with the lordship of the manor. In 1842 Daniel Scratton inherited the Priory and a succession of Scrattons owned it until 1917. It was then bought by Robert Jones a wealthy local businessman and presented to the town.
The blip shows the Refectory which was once the monks' dining hall.
There is a lovely walled garden with plenty of seating and flowers. Originally this would have been a kitchen garden with green and hothouses.
Here endeth the lesson!
