Cardiff Castle
As the weather has finally gone rainy here to catch up with the rest of the UK which seemed to have it a few days ago, Mrs BB wanted to go into Cardiff City Centre to have her womanly shopping fix.
I left her outside Cardiff Castle to do what she needed whilst I used my 'castle key' to have a walk around the grounds. The shower turned to rain and it's still the same this evening.
The blipfoto shows Cardiff Castle Norman motte with Keep.
The first Norman castle was built about 1091 by Robert Fitzhamon (Lord of Gloucester) of earth and timber fortification. During the 12th century Robert "the consul" (son of King Henry 1) had the present stone keep built. The 12 sided keep survives in fine condition with the only significant addition being its 15th century gatehouse and stairway. For a time the keep was the prison of Robert Curthose (2nd Duke of Normandy and elder brother of King Henry 1) who attempted to take the throne from Henry and after losing, Henry had him imprisoned at Cardiff Castle where he died in 1134.
