So, after seeing Cressida's wee pal from afar last night I was out again tonight a little later and the tide was sufficiently far out for me to investigate. I gather this is a 'Boss Baby' doll, from the film of the same name, although it didn't mean much to me. Seeing it up there made me think of Antony Gormley's Angel of the North sculpture. Shortly after it was erected locals draped a giant Alan Shearer Newcastle United shirt on its back - taken as a sign of local adoption of that particular piece of public art. Interestingly as I walked back up the beach, who should I meet but Cressida's creator, Lauren Fox, who just happened to be down on the sand enjoying the evening sun and a fish supper. Always nice to unexpectedly meet a friend and we had a chat. We talked a little about the new addition and she too felt it was a sign that the sculpture was being fully adopted by the people of Portobello. Although Lauren has been responsible for recent maintenance work she feels that the sculpture, now it has left her studio, belongs to the community for them to interact with as they want to (obviously, short of damaging it in any way), rather than it being kept untouched and pristine.
